AeroShell W Oils can be used in four-stroke (four-cycle) certifiedreciprocating piston engines, including fuel-injected andturbocharged engines. Radial engine operators tend to use AeroShellOil W120 in warm weather, while AeroShell Oil W100 and AeroShellOil W 15W-50 should be used in cooler temperatures.
For Lycoming and Continental flat engines, AeroShell Oil W100 orAeroShell Oil W 15W-50 are the most common choices. But AeroShellOil W80 works brilliantly in place of AeroShell Oil W100 during thecolder months.
Check with your engine manufacturer or rebuilder to find out ifAeroShell Oils W80, W100, or W120 can be used during break-in.While many engine manufacturers and rebuilders and overhaulagencies say to use straight mineral oils, some say that eitherashless dispersant or straight mineral oil can be used for break-in– for example, for Lycoming O-320H and O/LO360E. For allturbocharged Lycoming engines, ashless dispersant oils arerecommended for break-in.
AeroShell W Oils shouldn’t be used in automotive engines. If you’reusing an automotive engine that’s been converted for use in anaircraft, check with the engine manufacturer to find out which oilyou should use.
Single Grade Ashless Dispersant Oils
AeroShell Oils W80, W100, and W120 are ashless dispersant oilsspecifically developed for aviation piston engines. They reap theperformance benefits of combining non-metallic additives withselected high viscosity index base oils. No general rule exists forevery engine type when choosing the correct grade of oil; however,based on the average ambient outside temperature at enginestart-up, the most common grades are SAE 40, SAE 50, and SAE 60,which equate to AeroShell Oil W80, W100, and W120 respectively.
Traditionally, the choice is associated with climatic zones:AeroShell W80 for cold climate regions (-17 to 21°C), AeroShell OilW100 for temperate regions (16 to 32°C), and AeroShell Oil W120 forwarmer climates (above 26°C)
AeroShell Oils W80, W100, and W120 are produced to meet fully theSAE specification J1899 (Grades SAE 40, 50, and 60respectively).
AeroShell W80, W100, and W120 product benefits
Promotes engine cleanliness. The non-ash forming, polymericadditive was developed to help eliminate the harmful combustionchamber deposits that occur during normal operation.
High viscosity index base oils used in AeroShell W oils maintaintheir viscosity and help protect engine components more effectivelyunder the high shear stresses that an engine places onlubricants.
Provides compatibility with other approved aircraft pistonengine oils. Since AeroShell Oils W80, W100, and W120 are fullyapproved to SAE J1899 and are listed on the relevant QualifiedProducts List (QPL), elaborate precautions are not needed whenchanging from similarly approved aircraft engine oils, as long asthese oils are qualified products.
AeroShell W Oils are inherently stable in storage. Providingthey have been stored and handled correctly, prolonged storage doesnot have any effect on their quality, properties, orperformance.

Russian – MS-14 (AeroShell Oil W80), MS-20 (AeroShell OilW100).
Joint Service Designation – OMD-160 (AeroShell Oil W80), OMD-250(AeroShell Oil W100), OMD-370 (AeroShell Oil W120).

Typical properties of AeroShell Oils W80, W100, and W120
These oils displayed the right kinds of properties to gain theseapprovals, which can be found in the AeroShell Book. Below are someof the properties that AeroShell Oils W80, W100, and W120demonstrate:
SAE viscosity grade – 40 (AeroShell Oil W80), 50 (AeroShell OilW100), 60 (AeroShell Oil W120).
Viscosity index – 102 (AeroShell Oils W80), Greater than 96(AeroShell Oil W100 and W120).
Total acidity – Less than 0.5mgKOH/g for all threeAeroShell piston engine oils.
Copper corrosion at 100°C – 1a for all three AeroShell pistonengine oils.
Ash content – 0.004%m for all three AeroShell piston engineoils.
